Collagen is a type of fiber that occurs naturally in connective tissues and plays an important role in the structure of the intercellular space, the elasticity of bones, and the structure of cartilage. Its proportion varies across different types of connective tissue; for example, it makes up 97% of tendons. Collagen levels are constantly changing and reorganize in response to changes in load (e.g., changes in body weight). When connective tissue is damaged, regenerative mechanisms are triggered. Collagen therapy can help boost the body’s own collagen production and stimulate these self-healing processes.

What are collagen injections used for?

A renowned Italian professor has determined that collagen therapy is most effective in alleviating pain caused by disorders of the bone, joint, connective tissue, and muscular systems. In an international survey, 15–20% of the population reported experiencing such symptoms.

What exactly does this mean? It suggests that we often cannot pinpoint the cause of musculoskeletal or rheumatological symptoms to a single underlying condition: factors such as joint degeneration, loosening or degeneration of the joint capsule and ligaments, muscle tension, inflammation at the site where tendons attach, nerve damage, and many other factors may all play a role in the pain. While hyaluronic acid, which is already widely used, primarily has a beneficial effect on cartilage regeneration, collagen has a positive effect on many more types of tissue. Unlike traditional pain relievers, which generally only alleviate or eliminate symptoms, collagen promotes the repair of damaged tissues. Its effects develop more slowly but are more lasting and can persist for many months.

Whether it’s shoulder, hip, knee, or other joint pain; neck, back, or lower back pain; chronic sciatica; or tendon issues (such as tennis elbow or Achilles tendon pain), collagen treatment promises to relieve the pain.

How is collagen treatment performed?

During a course of collagen injections, 5–6 sessions are recommended, initially twice a week and then once a week, though this schedule can be adjusted flexibly. The collagen is injected subcutaneously at multiple points in the treatment area; typically, 2 ampules of collagen are used per session, one of which is tailored to the specific region, while the other contains adjuncts (vitamins, plant extracts) selected based on the type of issue being addressed. Thus, 10–12 ampoules are used during the course of treatment. No restrictions are expected to arise following the injections. According to observations, the most commonly reported side effect—headaches—can be prevented by drinking plenty of fluids.

What are the risks of the treatment?

Since this is a natural substance, no significant side effects are expected. One advantage is that it can be used even during long-term anticoagulation therapy, as well as in cases where local injections—which most often contain steroids—should be avoided due to other internal medical conditions (diabetes, severe hypertension). It is not considered doping and may even be used by athletes.

Medical collagen treatment is recommended for those who prefer natural solutions that target the root cause of their symptoms. Following a rheumatological examination and evaluation of a patient presenting with musculoskeletal symptoms, the specialist can determine what outcomes can be expected from the treatment in that individual’s specific case. When used in the appropriate dosage, most patients experience a reduction in pain and an improvement in mobility.
