The Difference Between Physical Therapy and Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy refers to healing performed with natural energies. It is an umbrella term that includes physiotherapy (exercise therapy) and physical therapy treatments.
Physical therapy uses only physical energies in treatment. This includes electrotherapy, hydrotherapy, and thermotherapy.
The following physical therapy treatments are available at our clinic

Areas of Physiotherapy
- Electrotherapy: electric current is used for treatments.
- Phototherapy: utilizes the therapeutic effects of light energy (laser therapy, Bioptron treatment, Heliotherapy: uses the beneficial effects of sunlight)
- Hydrotherapy: bath treatments, cold and hot compresses, packs
- Thermography: mud packs, sauna, paraffin treatment, etc.
- Mechanotherapy: physiotherapy, therapeutic massage, underwater jet massage, ultrasound therapy, shockwave therapy
- Balneotherapy: medicinal water baths, drinking cures, medicinal mud treatments
- Dietetics
The Goal of Physical Therapy
To alleviate the symptoms of various diseases and eliminate their causes. Pain relief, anti-inflammatory effects, alleviation of respiratory disease symptoms, e.g., with the help of phototherapy or thermotherapy.
It can also be applied during rheumatological, orthopedic, and traumatology aftercare.
The Process of Physical Therapy
For treatments, it is essential to expose the area to be treated and make the patient comfortable, as one session can last 20, 30, or even 60 minutes.
These treatments are not painful. During electrotherapy, a stinging, pricking sensation may occur under the electrode. Redness or mild itching may appear in this area, as the electric current can dry out the skin. In this case, it is advisable to apply body lotion to the area at home. There are treatments during which no current sensation or heat effect is experienced. Examples include ultrasound and laser treatment.
Side Effects of Physical Therapy
Treatments performed on the neck area can raise the blood pressure of susceptible individuals.
Due to the circulation-enhancing effect of the treatments, they cannot be performed on areas with extreme varicose veins.
Treatments cannot be applied over metal prostheses, as they may loosen or dislodge them from their position.
Treatments cannot be performed in cases of malignant tumors. Due to their circulation-enhancing effect, cancerous cells may spread and metastasize.

Shockwave Treatment
Shockwaves interact with tissues to exert a healing effect on the body: they accelerate regeneration, stimulate cell growth, reduce pain, and help restore mobility. A shockwave is an acoustic wave that delivers high energy to painful points, thereby reducing pain and accelerating healing, as well as the regeneration of tendons and tissues. The therapy has a local circulation-enhancing effect. As a result, anti-inflammatory factors accumulate in the treated area, which also speeds up healing. Indications include: shoulder pain, tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, muscle pain, chronic tendinitis, calcification, treatment of diabetic leg ulcers…
Ultrasound Treatment
In ultrasound therapy for medical purposes, we utilize three beneficial effects of ultrasound. Its mechanical effect creates micromassage in the tissues, which increases blood flow and stimulates lymphatic circulation.
Its thermal effect warms and relaxes the affected area, which alleviates pain. Its chemical effect increases oxygen supply to the treated area and dilates blood vessels. Overall, ultrasound therapy is an excellent muscle relaxant and pain-relieving treatment that naturally stimulates healing processes.
The treatment is primarily recommended for degenerative joint diseases (arthrosis), but it can also be effectively used for muscle strains, muscle pain, sports injuries, changes in tendon attachments and sheaths, bone spurs, and tendon contractures.
Electrotherapy – TENS Treatment
Our clinics are equipped with electrotherapy devices that allow us to effectively and individually tailor the necessary treatment package for the patient to ensure faster recovery.
TENS is an acronym for Transcutaneous Electrical Neuro-Stimulation, which means electrical nerve stimulation through the skin. This is a low-frequency electrotherapy that can stimulate both weakened muscles and less functional nerves. Muscle contraction is achieved by placing the device’s plate electrodes on the muscle belly (close to the origin and insertion) and setting the necessary parameters.
Its application can prevent the weakening of unused muscles, further strengthen muscles, and treat problematic nerves.
The use of low-intensity, short-duration electrical impulses is a safe, side-effect-free method for pain relief and anti-inflammatory action. The effectiveness of TENS treatment in pain management has been proven by decades of experience.
Indication: rehabilitation after surgeries, treatment of paralysis, stimulation of atrophied muscles.
The therapy also addresses disc problems (disc protrusion, disc prolapse, disc herniation), postural problems of the spine, and problems of the extremity joints.

Laser Treatment
It accelerates the healing of muscle strains, ruptures, and bone fractures. It speeds up or initiates the body’s healing processes, improves blood and lymphatic circulation, and stimulates the regeneration of damaged nerves. Indication: acute and chronic rheumatological diseases, sports injuries, muscle pain, muscle spasms.
Iontophoresis
With the help of electric current, medication is delivered directly to the painful, inflamed area. The electric current locally introduces the specific anti-inflammatory or pain reliever through the skin during the treatment. We most often use medicinal ointments (Voltaren, Fastum, Horse Balm…) and Lidocaine for these treatments.
Corposano Treatment
It has pain-relieving and muscle-relaxing effects. In addition, it can be used to strengthen and stimulate weakened, atrophied muscles, similar to selective stimulating current treatment. It is also widespread in the beauty industry due to its circulation-enhancing, anti-wrinkle, and regenerating effects.
Selective electrotherapy
During this treatment, electrical stimulation induces a physiological-like contraction of paralyzed or normally innervated, atrophied muscles. This leads to muscle tissue thickening and strengthening, improves muscle tissue metabolism, and helps restore muscle strength and prevent or slow down atrophy.
Wave Massage
Proper blood and lymphatic circulation are fundamental prerequisites for the functioning of the human body. However, today’s stressful, sedentary, and unhealthy lifestyle weakens and slows down our circulatory system, which can lead to serious problems and diseases. Special wave massage aids and enhances the body’s cleansing system, the lymphatic circulation, to achieve individual therapeutic goals.
In cases of a history of malignant tumors, an oncologist’s recommendation is required for physical therapy treatments, regardless of the region.
