Physiotherapy - Fascia Blade Treatment

What is Fascia Blade Treatment?

The fascia is a connective tissue found throughout the human body. It surrounds muscles, bones, tendons, organs, blood vessels, and nerves. This system enables communication within the body. It also plays a crucial role in our posture, sensation, and load distribution. Due to a sedentary lifestyle, prolonged sitting, injury, or repetitive incorrect movements, the fascia can become adhered, like a tight neoprene suit, hindering movement. Fascia adhesions in a specific area can cause discomfort in more distant parts of the body, such as soft tissue tension, tingling, or unusual sensations (like ants crawling or needle pricks). Our goal with various soft tissue manual therapy treatment options is to restore fascia mobility and maintain it long-term. Fascia blade treatment is one of these therapies.

Fascia blades can be made from various materials, such as metal, wood, minerals, bone, or horn. Their size and shape can vary, which helps the therapist select the most suitable one for the body part to be treated. A small amount of carrier substance, such as petroleum jelly, a little massage oil, or cream, may be used during the treatment to reduce skin irritation in the treated area.

Due to the shape and material of fascia blades, fascia mobilization can be performed precisely, and pressure can be applied evenly. The use of this tool allows us to loosen even stronger connective tissue tension.

The treatment with the instrument is preceded by a thorough examination and is always performed by a qualified therapist. We identify the connective tissue adhesions in the affected region and assess their extent.

Effects of Fascia Blade Treatment

  • Reduces adhesions and stickiness between tissues
  • Improves and restores mobility between connective tissue layers
  • Improves the condition of connective tissue
  • Relieves pain
  • Improves joint range of motion
  • Enhances circulation and metabolism
  • Reduces edema
  • Improves general well-being

During the treatment, the selected instrument is set at the appropriate angle, and then pressure and slow gliding are applied to the skin. The adhesions and stickiness between the soft tissues gradually begin to loosen, which aids in soft tissue mobility. We continuously communicate with our patient during the treatment, ensuring that the pain intensity does not exceed a certain limit. Bruising of the skin may occur during treatment, but it is never our goal to cause this. These bruises typically resolve within a few days.
