Lower back pain

The most common rheumatological complaints

It is advisable to consult a rheumatologist in cases of acute joint inflammation, joint, tendon and muscle pain (exposed to stress), spinal pain (neck, back, lower back), pain radiating to the arm, shoulder or lower limb.

The field of rheumatology includes diseases with frequent, recurring complaints, such as joint degeneration, joint inflammation, neuritis, tennis elbow, osteoporosis, and many other diseases. Most commonly:

  • lower back pain,
  • lumbago,
  • sciatica,
  • neck pain,
  • knee pain,
  • hip pain,
  • shoulder pain,
  • hand,
  • elbow,
  • foot or heel pain are the reasons our patients visit our clinic.

Rheumatological diseases do NOT include conditions that have developed as a result of accidental injury or developmental abnormality.

X-ray diagnostic examination available on-site at the Óbuda Musculoskeletal Private Outpatient Clinic

Rheumatological examination with X-ray diagnostics

In cases of rheumatological painful complaints, the specialist often recommends an X-ray examination to refine the diagnosis. In such cases, the X-ray can be the key to differential diagnostics: it supports, refines, or even refutes the diagnosis assumed based on the specialist’s physical examination with images. Changes in bones and joints are clearly visible on X-rays, so the appropriate X-ray examination excellently supports the establishment of an accurate and precise diagnosis. This is the basis for appropriate and targeted therapy.

X-ray examination is now available at two clinics of the Budapest Musculoskeletal Private Clinic, even immediately after the rheumatological specialist examination! At the Óbuda Private Clinic, upon specialist recommendation, we can provide the necessary X-ray diagnostics immediately!

Important: the price of imaging diagnostics is NOT included in the specialist examination fee; this must be paid separately. You can find information about the prices of various X-ray examinations here.

When should I go to a rheumatology private outpatient clinic?

Rheumatology deals with the examination of musculoskeletal diseases, identifying their causes, and complex treatment.

At the Budapest Musculoskeletal Private Clinic, a rheumatological specialist examination can take place even today, but within 19 hours. There are consultations every day, including Sundays. It is advisable to start the examination as soon as possible, because early detection results in faster and more effective recovery.

What problems should I consult a rheumatologist about?

Both rheumatologists and orthopedic specialists often encounter degenerative joint changes, disc herniation (also known as spinal disc herniation), but rheumatologist specialists deal with suddenly occurring or prolonged inflammatory joint complaints. These include, for example, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, or other inflammatory joint conditions.

After the examination and establishing the preliminary diagnosis, our most important task is pain relief. Pharmacological pain relief can be local anti-inflammatory or injection treatment. We often recommend complex physiotherapy treatments to alleviate symptoms.

At rheumatology private outpatient clinics, the examination and treatment of osteoporosis, which is common among women over 45, is also emphasized, but let us not forget about osteoporosis in men either.

Other telltale symptoms behind rheumatological diseases

Symptoms of musculoskeletal diseases affecting the spine can include headache, vertigo, pain radiating toward the heart, pelvis, arm, or leg, so imaging and nerve conduction studies may also be necessary to identify and diagnose the problem.

In our private rheumatology practice network located in Budapest’s 11th, 13th, and 3rd districts, we place great emphasis on alleviating pain caused by musculoskeletal diseases.

Our staff awaits your call Monday to Saturday between 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM. For acute lower back pain, we guarantee an appointment for a medical examination on the same day!

Rheumatological examination

What should I expect at the rheumatology private outpatient clinic?

Thorough anamnesis, that is, uncovering the medical history. Rheumatological diseases are often complex and difficult to diagnose. During the examination, the complete medical history must be uncovered. By exploring the family medical history, we must also pay attention to hereditary factors. Thorough questioning already means half the diagnosis.

We perform an extensive physical examination to find painful points, possible inflammation, and abnormalities of bones, joints, or muscles.

Review of previous examinations is the next step. By analyzing laboratory, imaging, and electrophysiological examinations, we get closer to the diagnosis. If necessary, we order additional examinations.

The necessary additional examination may be – depending on the problem: laboratory test, imaging examination, or possibly related specialist examination (e.g., neurological, neurosurgery, immunology consultation).

The most commonly used imaging procedures are MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), ultrasound, X-ray, CT, ENG and EMG examinations show whether there is inflammation or other anatomical abnormality, or possibly excessive antibody formation in the body, which may indicate problems with bones, joints, muscles, nerves, or even autoimmune disease.

Performing imaging examinations is often essential for assessing structural and anatomical abnormalities. Thanks to today’s modern, digital, high-resolution imaging methods, we recognize even minor abnormalities early and accurately, and detect degenerative, inflammatory, and traumatic processes at an early stage.

Some imaging diagnostic examinations are already available at specific locations of the Budapest Musculoskeletal Private Clinic!

X-ray examination is available immediately after the specialist examination at the Óbuda Musculoskeletal Private Clinic upon specialist recommendation. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination is available with prior appointment booking, without referral, with a short deadline. ENG and EMG examinations are available at the Pest Musculoskeletal Private Clinic with prior specialist examination and recommendation, by appointment.

In light of the medical history, physical examination, and examination results, the rheumatologist specialist establishes the diagnosis and prepares an appropriate treatment plan.

Rheumatological treatment can be varied:

If the rheumatologist deems it necessary, they may also provide a referral to another specialist outpatient clinic, which is most commonly: neurological, orthopedic, neurosurgical consultation.

During subsequent follow-up appointments, the rheumatologist analyzes new examination results, evaluates the effectiveness of the previous treatment recommendation, treats recurring or persistent complaints, reviews the effectiveness of pharmacological treatment, monitors possible side effects, and may apply various treatments to improve mobility and quality of life.

Rheumatology - Spinal problems

What do we do at our rheumatology private outpatient clinic?

At our rheumatology private outpatient clinic, comprehensive examination, immediate pain relief, and complex therapy are available every day of the week.

Essential parts of the medical examination: Mapping the medical history is already half the diagnosis. We complement very thorough questioning and evaluation of previous medical reports with an extensive physical examination. Mapping the quantity and quality of complaints and pain is our primary task.

Imaging examinations: if necessary, we request X-ray, ultrasound, or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination.

At the Óbuda Musculoskeletal Private Clinic, X-ray diagnostic examination is already available, even immediately after the specialist examination (for a separate fee)!

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination is available without referral, with a short deadline, by appointment at the Szent Magdolna Private Hospital.

Based on thorough questioning, physical examination, and imaging examination results, the rheumatologist specialist establishes the diagnosis. According to the precise diagnosis, a personalized treatment plan is prepared, which may consist of a combination of several therapeutic options.

Rheumatological treatment options:

  • Pharmacological (tablet, capsule, suppository, patch, ointment)
  • Local injection: usually steroid-containing (which has anti-inflammatory effect), supplemented with pain reliever
  • Joint injection: joint cartilage-protecting hyaluronic acid injection or steroid and pain reliever injection.
  • Medical collagen injection treatment
  • Infusion treatments
  • Physiotherapy: we provide complex therapy, in which physiotherapy plays a central role, and we also provide other physiotherapy treatments as a supplement.

What should I bring to my first rheumatology examination?

For the first specialist outpatient clinic, definitely bring the following:

  • bring the results of previous laboratory and imaging examinations (MRI, X-ray, ultrasound) (description and CD as well) to the first examination.
  • Also show your doctor the medical reports you received at previous medical treatments, as they may contain important details about your current condition and the treatment methods you received.
  • Also bring a list of what medications you take regularly and their dosages.
  • If you have any allergies or drug sensitivities, be sure to inform your rheumatologist about them.
  • If there is or was rheumatological or autoimmune disease in your family, also report these.

How long does a rheumatology examination take?

The first examination is a bit longer than a follow-up examination, as thorough questioning is also necessary before starting treatment. Generally, the first examination is 30 minutes, the follow-up examination is 20 minutes.

Within the framework of a rheumatology private outpatient clinic, the examination means that after thorough questioning, the rheumatologist examines the painful body part and its surroundings according to the specialist protocol.

After the examination, at our rheumatology private outpatient clinic, we start treatment immediately, during the first visit.
Depending on the examination result, this is:

  • prescribing medication,
  • prescribing medical aid devices (corset, crutch, fixators),
  • injection treatment, in case of severe pain
  • physiotherapy or manual therapy treatment
  • physiotherapy treatment (with the help of ultrasound, soft laser, shock wave or TENS device)
  • kinesiology tape treatment
  • fascia or connective tissue release
  • organizing further medical, laboratory examinations, requesting neurologist or orthopedic surgical opinion

During the first visit, it also becomes clear whether further follow-up is needed within the framework of rheumatology private outpatient clinic or other specialist care.

Gout

Common rheumatology diseases

Previously, all joint-related pain and most autoimmune diseases were simply called rheumatic diseases.

According to our current knowledge, we distinguish more than 200 types of rheumatology diseases.

The most common:

  • degenerative joint inflammation (hip, knee, shoulder joint inflammation)
  • spinal calcification (spondylosis), disc degeneration (discopathy), disc herniation
  • soft tissue rheumatism: tendinitis, muscle strain, tennis and golfer’s elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome
  • rheumatoid arthritis (polyarthritis)
  • psoriatic arthritis (arthritis psoriatica)
  • spondyloarthritis (spinal inflammation, Bechterew’s disease)
  • gout
  • osteoporosis

In which complaints is rheumatology examination necessary as soon as possible?

  • one or more joints suddenly swell, become swollen, become very painful, or the surrounding area becomes red,
  • pain also occurs at night, resting pain develops,
  • walking ability significantly decreases,
  • weakness, paralysis occurs in certain muscles or muscle groups,
  • pain is accompanied by numbness.

If the above complaints appear, request an appointment for emergency rheumatological examination at our telephone customer service! At BMM’s three Budapest private clinics, we guarantee an appointment for urgent rheumatological examination within 19 hours!

What causes rheumatology diseases?

We distinguish more than 200 types of diseases belonging to the field of rheumatology.

A large group of joint diseases consists of conditions with immune-mediated joint inflammation, among which rheumatoid arthritis or polyarthritis disease stands out. The exact cause of its development is not known; certain environmental factors (infections, smoking, trauma, stress) trigger the pathological immune process on the basis of genetic susceptibility.

In case of suspected inflammatory joint disease, pharmacological treatment must be started as soon as possible based on the diagnosis established after rapid examination, so rheumatological examination is urgent. Leave the clarification of causes to a specialist, because a well-chosen examination and treatment shortens the recovery time by months or years.
