Pediatric Orthopedic Screening Examinations – When and What Should Be Examined?
At 4-6 weeks of age, infant ultrasound hip examination is recommended. Infant hip screening can detect and correct hip dislocation early and effectively.
After 1 year of age, a general orthopedic screening examination is recommended. When your child is able to take their first independent steps, a comprehensive orthopedic examination is recommended to assess the feet, posture, gait, and knee alignment.
After 4 years of age, it is necessary to repeat the general pediatric orthopedic screening examination. As walking improves and daily shoe use begins, a follow-up examination is recommended to check gait, posture, and ankle and knee alignment, and to correct them if necessary, so that proper posture is established by school age.
After 6 years of age, at the beginning of school age, a spinal screening examination is recommended to check posture and the degree of scoliosis, which can be corrected with appropriate therapy.

What Happens During a Pediatric Orthopedic Examination?
- Anamnesis: mapping the circumstances of labor and birth.
- Screenings, developmental abnormalities: neonatal hip dislocation or hip immaturity—can be screened with early, targeted ultrasound examinations, thus preventing severe musculoskeletal diseases that may occur later.
- Infant screening, which extends not only to the hip joint.
- Inspection: posture and gait examination, joint axis deviations—examination of the shape of the chest, spine, and joints.
- Functional examination: functional examination of the spine, examination of the range of motion and deformities and axis deviations of small and large joints (shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, ankle).
