What does a specialist in immunology do?

An immunologist deals with the functioning of the immune system, its disorders and their consequences. The immune system’s role is to protect the body against pathogens and to recognise and deal with ‘foreign’ and ‘foreign’ elements. When this balance is upset, various, often difficult to identify, complaints and diseases can develop.

Immunological abnormalities can affect many organs and organ systems, so the complaints are often ambiguous and occur at the boundaries of other specialties. The immunologist’s role is to identify the underlying causes, identify the correlations and define a personalised investigation and treatment strategy.

Treatment options for immunological abnormalities in the field of immunology

In each case, our specialist immunologists provide our patients with a personalised treatment plan. The therapy is based on the results of a detailed examination. We mainly use conservative, non-invasive procedures, complementing treatment with other specialties when necessary.

Our immunology services include the following options:

  • Adjusting medication to immunological abnormalities in immunology.
  • Care and control of autoimmune diseases .
  • Targeted treatment of allergic and hypersensitivity reactions.
  • Investigate recurrent infections and support the immune system.
  • Referral to allied professions for complex care where necessary.

Our specialist immunologists deal with, among other things:

  • investigating and treating autoimmune diseases,
  • clarifying the background of allergic and hypersensitivity reactions,
  • identifying the causes of recurrent or persistent infections,
  • investigating inflammation of unknown origin,
  • a comprehensive assessment of the immune system.

If necessary, the immunology examination is carried out in collaboration with other specialties to ensure that the patient has a complete picture of his or her condition and receives the most appropriate care.

What happens during an immunological examination?

The first step of the immunological examination is a thorough questioning of the patient, the anamnesis, i.e., establishing the medical history. The description of the symptoms experienced is fundamentally important in determining the direction of the examination. If the patient has previous test results or laboratory reports related to their complaints, these are thoroughly reviewed and discussed. This is followed by a physical examination based on the described symptoms. After the consultation and examination, the immunologist specialist may recommend further tests to establish an accurate diagnosis. These may include additional specific laboratory tests, imaging radiological examinations, and often further specialist examinations (e.g., pulmonological, cardiological evaluation).

Once the test results are available, the immunologist specialist establishes the diagnosis and the personalized treatment plan. The treatment of immunological diseases is complex and often lifelong. It requires continuous monitoring and care. In most cases, with the appropriate therapy, the previous quality of life can be restored and the complaints can be eliminated.
