Functional training
What is functional training?
It is a form of exercise that primarily focuses on strengthening the core muscles. The primary function of the core is stabilization and mobility. The movement patterns are goal-oriented and developed level by level, starting from a basic level, with or without equipment, progressing from stable exercises to unstable ones, and from simpler to more difficult, complex ones.
We move the joints and muscles in all directions in space, in movement chains. Every movement involves the simultaneous, coordinated work of multiple joints, and every movement is also a sensorimotor development: it results in muscles that are not just “quantitative” but also “qualitative.”
What is the essence of functional training?
The essence of functional training is that it treats the body as a whole.
We practice movements used purposefully and correctly in daily life: squatting, bending, lifting, etc., while learning the correct spinal and pelvic posture and proper use of our body in corrected positions.
The range of exercise types is almost limitless, offering a very diverse palette from which we can choose according to our preferences. Naturally, the supervision of trained professionals is crucial; they can help make our workouts functional without injury, tailored to our needs and level.
Mechanism of action of functional training / physiotherapy
For the functional operation of the spine, the proper functioning of the active (muscles, voluntarily controlled elements) and passive (involuntarily controlled elements) stabilizing systems, and the neural control ensuring the coordinated operation of these two systems, are necessary.
Its mechanism of action is realized through the activation of the active system and the regulation of the nervous system. Development of nervous system function (inter- and intramuscular coordination), development of joint protection, coordination development, balance development, development of movement patterns to a high quality (progression of motor learning: from easy to difficult, simple to complex, known to unknown, stable to unstable).
Functional physiotherapy treatments
Following a physical assessment and the establishment of a functional diagnosis, we create an individualized physiotherapy program for our patients:
- Restoring the functional capacity of the spine (stability, mobility, endurance, load-bearing capacity) as far as possible
- Reducing or eliminating pain and other symptoms (sensory/motor) associated with spinal problems
- Preventing/slowing the progression of existing problems
- Health preservation / prevention
