What is conductive pedagogy?

The system of conductive pedagogy, also known as conductive education, is a true Hungarian innovation created by András Pető.

Conductive pedagogy has a holistic view of the human being, considering the person as a multifaceted unity, the whole of body-soul-spirit. Its method enables the development of individuals living with central nervous system damage or disease. Particularly excellent results can be achieved in the complex development of individuals with motor disabilities.

The goal of conductive pedagogy is to promote the development of gross and fine motor, cognitive, and social abilities. Through the synergistic application of pedagogical, psychological, and rehabilitation techniques, a better quality of life becomes accessible for patients. The development of the most active and independent, constructive lifestyle possible, according to the individual’s abilities, can be achieved.

Conductive education

When is conductive education recommended and who does it help most?

Conductive pedagogy can be applied to both adults and children. It can be effective at any age, but children often have greater developmental potential due to the brain’s greater plasticity.

Conductive education for children

For children in continuous development, the method of conductive pedagogy can become part of careful education. This can improve the children’s life prospects and provide them with the opportunity to achieve a fuller adulthood.

We welcome children for conductive education in the following cases:

  • Premature children
  • Neurological involvement
  • Severe and mild motor developmental delay
  • Foot and spinal deformities
  • Sensory hypersensitivity
  • Sensory, intellectual, or speech disabilities
  • Motor disability, altered motor status
  • Children with cerebral palsy

For preschool-age children (3-6 years), our goal is to provide adaptive development based on individual abilities and needs, appropriate to age characteristics, in a playful form. The sessions are implemented in a complex manner, developing movement, intellect, speech and communication, manipulation, play activity, perception, self-care, balance, eye-hand and eye-foot coordination, and social skills. The sessions take place in groups and through differentiated individual development.

Naturally, significant results can be achieved not only with preschoolers but also with older children.

If you feel that your child would benefit from conductive education, but the listed symptoms/conditions do not completely match those mentioned above, please do not hesitate to contact BMM. Our conductor, Lili Darai, will help.

Conductive pedagogy for adults

Conductive pedagogy is not exclusively for children; it can also be excellently applied to adult development. At older ages, therapy is recommended in the following cases:

  • Cerebral palsy
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Foot and spinal deformities
  • Various post-stroke conditions (hemiparesis, aphasia)
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Multiple sclerosis

For adults, our primary goal is the rehabilitation of individuals with motor disabilities, their social integration, and helping them achieve the greatest possible degree of independence.

We pay special attention to the following:

  • learning individual position changes
  • developing gross and fine motor skills
  • establishing symmetrical body position
  • reducing pathological associated movements
  • developing eye-hand coordination
  • awareness of directions
  • improving grasp-release
  • developing logical thinking and attention

Conductive education

Conductive pedagogy is available in both individual and small group formats

When our patient enters the world of conductive pedagogy, we invite them to individual and small group adventures. The path of development begins with the initial assessment, where we set personalized, achievable short-term and long-term goals.

After creating a trust-based, secure atmosphere, we not only teach our patients but also inspire them to develop. We embark on a shared journey that involves learning so-called “orthomotor solutions.” While concentrating on developing individual abilities and skills, we naturally also take into account age-specific characteristics during conductive education.

Our primary goal is to eliminate unwanted movement patterns, develop the nervous system, and facilitate daily activity. In this process, adherence to gradual progression, regularity, and consistency is crucial. Home practice of what is learned during therapeutic sessions further reinforces the learning and helps achieve the best results.

It is worth noting that conductive pedagogy does not only prioritize physical development. This is a holistic approach that balances physical, mental, and emotional development. For this reason, therapeutic sessions often include playful elements and creative techniques that help make the learning process enjoyable. All of these contribute to the development of the whole personality and the promotion of independent living.
