Temporomandibular joint therapy
Nowadays, we increasingly encounter temporomandibular joint (TMJ) complaints: difficulty opening the mouth, clicking jaw joint, teeth grinding, and muscle tension around the TMJ. With manual therapy and supplementary treatments, we can effectively alleviate or even eliminate these symptoms.
Structure of Temporomandibular Joint Therapy
During the first consultation, the therapist takes a detailed anamnesis, listens to the patient’s complaints and medical history, followed by a thorough posture analysis. This is crucial because TMJ complaints are very often associated with postural problems, such as scoliosis. We also examine the TMJ mechanics, range of motion, and the condition of the muscles that move the joint.
Following this, we discuss the deviations observed during the examination and the available therapeutic options. Ideally, treatment can commence immediately.
How does temporomandibular joint therapy work in practice?
During the examination, we look for painful points in the muscles that move the temporomandibular joint; these are called trigger points. Treatments are always performed with rubber gloves. We treat the trigger points in the muscles with pressure, going up to a maximum intensity of 7 on a 10-point scale, and treating each muscle for approximately 10 minutes. The trigger point therapy relaxes the muscle and reduces pain.
Muscle treatment is followed by joint mobilization. Subsequently, the patient receives homework, which is self-therapy, and plays a significant role in recovery.
