Scoliosis
What is scoliosis and how can we recognise it?
Scoliosis is the lateral bending of the spine associated with torsion. In most cases , the mobility of the affected vertebrae is significantly reduced, to the point where active straightening of the vertebral column is no longer possible. Lateral curvature is most often associated with a twisting of the vertebra, resulting in a so-called rib hump in the dorsal segment and a muscle hump in the lumbar segment . Its symptoms are easily recognisable and can be detected by a simple medical examination.
Scoliosis is one of the most common spinal problems today, which is why it is particularly important to draw attention to the importance of screening in children!
The underlying causes of the problem can be neuromuscular, psychological, or due to a sedentary lifestyle, but in most cases they are not clear. Early detection is the most important element in its treatment , and therefore it is recommended to have a screening test for pediatric orthopedics from an early age. A specialist examination can easily identify the problem and even detect a predisposition before it develops. Conservative therapy is recommended: for curvatures of less than 20 degrees, a physiotherapyAbove this limit, a corset may be required. Excessive and extreme deformities, however, can only be corrected by surgery.
Can scoliosis be prevented?
Scoliosis is easily preventable, so it’s worth looking out for it from an early age. However, it is also common in adults and can cause everyday complaints. The spine’s ability to bear weight is reduced, leading to back and lower back pain, which can even lead to reduced mobility.
Protecting and maintaining the spine is therefore crucial to maintaining pain-free mobility. In the event of pain, stiffness, visible asymmetry and other complaints, an examination in the field of orthopedics is recommended as soon as possible , as the sooner the complaint is diagnosed, the easier it is to treat.
