Although rheumatology and orthopedics are two medical specialties that in many cases overlap, there are some important differences between them.
What are the similarities between the two disciplines?
Their similarity is due to the fact that they are both essentially concerned with musculoskeletal disorders, i.e. pain and stiffness of muscles, tendons, joints and bones.
The difference lies mainly in the causes of the complaint.
What does rheumatology do?
Rheumatology is the speciality of internal medicine that focuses on diseases of the musculoskeletal system. It affects nearly 70% of the population, regardless of age.
Rheumatism causes pain and stiffness in the muscles, tendons, spine and joints. Symptoms can last for a few days or even years, causing minor discomfort or severe disability. To relieve the pain and stiffness, the rheumatism that is causing the symptoms needs to be treated.
What does orthopedics do?
Medical speciality dealing with congenital and acquired disorders of the musculoskeletal system and their treatment. It includes musculoskeletal disorders:
- Disease of the limb bones, joints and tendons
- Some of the muscle diseases, as well as
- Also lesions of the vertebrae of the spinal column and surrounding soft tissues
In the beginning, orthopedics tried to cure the problems of people with various deformities, deformities and even paralysis mainly with mechanical aids, perhaps even by offering baths.
Today, doctors have a wide range of options for treating musculoskeletal disorders. Since the invention of anaesthesia, not only conservative, i.e. bloodless methods (such as physiotherapy, physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, etc.) but also surgical interventions have been performed by specialists.
The main objective of our doctors in both specialties is to provide the most appropriate and effective therapeutic proposal for the patient , in order to achieve a rapid and long-term recovery. The identification of the causes of the complaint is key and a detailed and thorough examination is carried out.
