What are the most common diseases of the spine?
The spine is one of the most important components of the human body, not only responsible for movement but also containing the central part of the nervous system. Unfortunately, our spine is prone to many diseases, which are increasingly caused by a sedentary, sedentary lifestyle.
Most common spine diseases:
- Isias
Inflammation or irritation of the sciatic nerve, often accompanied by pain in the lower back and radiating pain and numbness in the leg. - Nerve pinching
In this case, one or more nerves in the spine come under pressure, which can cause pain, numbness or even weakness in the affected area. - Bekhterev's disease
A chronic inflammatory disease that mainly affects the spine, causing stiffness and pain in the patient. - Idegzaba
Inflammation of the nerves in the spine, which can cause sharp, burning pain along the spine. - Laposhát - Scheuermann's disease
An adolescent disease associated with excessive flattening of the upper part of the spine (back and neck). In severe cases, it leads to loss of the natural curvature of the spine.
- Spinal stenosis
A narrowing of the bony cavity in the spinal column (the spinal canal) puts pressure on the nerves running through it. This condition can cause severe pain and reduced mobility.
- Herniated disc also known as herniated disc (discus hernia)
A chronic inflammatory disease that mainly affects the spine, causing stiffness and pain in the patient.
- Lumbago
Sudden onset of severe low back pain, often caused by overuse of the spine or an incorrect movement. - Degenerative joint disease (osteoarthritis)
It is particularly common in older people and is associated with cartilage wear. It usually causes pain and stiffness. This disease can reduce the mobility of the spine and make it difficult to carry out everyday activities.
- Osteoporosis
Bone mass is reduced. The condition weakens the bones and increases the risk of fractures.
- Scoliosis (scoliosis)
Lateral curvature of the spine, which leads to postural problems. A common problem, especially in adolescence.
- Discopathy
It means disease or damage to the discs in the spine.
- Spondylosis
A degenerative disease of the spinal column, which is associated with wear and tear of joints and vertebrae, which can lead to pain and stiffness.
- Sciatic nerve inflammation
It occurs when the sciatic nerve (one of the longest and thickest nerves in the body) suffers irritation or pressure. The main symptoms are lower back pain, numbness and weakness in the legs. This problem is often caused by a herniated disc or spinal stenosis.
Herniated disc and disc herniation - the primary cause of low back pain?
A spinal hernia it is important to know that the vertebral column is made up of vertebrae, with the intervertebral discs providing the flexible connection between them.
The discs are made up of two parts:
- an outer circular fibre ring, and
- from an inner jelly-like seed.
The intervertebral discs are the “shock absorbers” of our spine, ensuring the mobility and flexibility of the spinal column.
In a herniated disc, the outer fibrous ring of the disc ruptures and the nucleus pulposus protrudes through it, creating a so-called outgrowth. This can cause the nerve roots exiting the spinal cord to come under pressure, become pinched and inflamed, and even damaged. Damage to the nerve fibres can cause long-term mobility problems, including paralysis.
The main symptom of a herniated disc is sharp pain, but the condition can also be accompanied by numbness.
Waist pain, which is now almost a widespread disease, is very often caused by a hernia. It is important to detect and treat spinal lesions early to avoid surgery later.- A herniated disc can rupture without proper treatment and attention, and may result in further nerve damage with severe pain and reduced mobility. Spinal hernia can usually be treated very well with conservative methods, but there are some advanced conditions where only spinal hernia surgery can provide a solution. - The BMM Spine Centre team also provides professional assistance in the event of surgery.
Neck pain
Cervical hernia is a disease of the discs between the vertebrae of the cervical spine. In this condition, the inner, softer part of the disc is torn out through the outer, stronger ring, as mentioned above. This tearing puts pressure on the nerves of the cervical spine and the spinal cord, which can cause pain, numbness, weakness or numbness in the arms and other parts of the upper body.
Cervical spinal hernia is a common condition, especially in people who perform monotonous, neck-straining activities such as sedentary work over long periods of time.
Symptoms of cervical hernia include:
- pain in the neck, shoulders and arms,
- numbness or tingling in the arms or fingers,
- and occasionally muscle weakness.
These symptoms can be aggravated by moving the head in certain directions.
A accurate diagnosis usually involves a physical examination, anamnesis (patient history), and imaging procedures such as X-rays, MRI or CT scan.
Treatment may include conservative methods:
- physiotherapy (physiotherapy),
- pain relief with medication,
- or in more serious cases, surgical intervention
The aim is to reduce neck pain, restore mobility and prevent further nerve damage.
Lumbar spondylolisthesis and sciatica in the back - why are more and more people affected?
Due to modern sedentary lifestyles and increasing physical inactivity, more and more people are suffering from low back pain. These are most often caused by sciatica and lumbago, which not only cause discomfort and pain, but can also have a serious negative impact on the quality of daily life.
- A lumbago the main symptom is a sharp pain in the lower back. The most common causes of this problem are incorrect posture, a wrong movement or lifting too much weight incorrectly. Low back pain can start suddenly and can be acute or chronic, restricting movement.
- From isias, also known as sciatica, is a condition involving irritation or pressure on the sciatic nerve. It usually causes pain, numbness, burning sensation or weakness from the waist through the legs, often down to the toes. The sciatic nerve is one of the largest and longest nerves in the human body, originating from the lower part of the spine and running down the legs to the toes. Sciatica often develops as a result of herniated discs in the spinal cord, muscle inflammation or other spinal disorders. The pain caused by sciatica can vary in severity, from mild discomfort to unbearable pain.
In summary, lumbar spondylolisthesis and sciatica are common causes of low back pain, and lifestyle awareness and proper medical care are key to their prevention and treatment. If you are experiencing similar symptoms, be sure to consult a specialist to determine the correct diagnosis and treatment plan.
How is the diagnosis of low back pain and other spinal disorders made at the BMM Spine Centre?
The BMM Spine Centre offers outstanding assistance in the effective diagnosis and professional treatment of back pain and other spinal disorders. A thorough diagnostic process is essential to establish an accurate diagnosis and develop the most appropriate treatment plan.

This helps the doctor to understand the background and context of the complaints. This is followed by physical examination during which the doctor checks the mobility of the spine, muscle tone and the exact location of the pain. This helps identify the source of the pain.
- A imaging studies, such as X-rays, CT (computed tomography), or MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) are often necessary to make an accurate diagnosis. These procedures give a detailed picture of the condition of the spine. Your doctor may need to electromyography (EMG) request an examination to map nerve-muscle function.
- The results of the diagnostic process are evaluated during the check-up with the doctor. Based on this information, the spine specialist will draw up an individual treatment plan, which may include medication, physiotherapy, physiotherapy, manual therapy or even surgery.
- A physiotherapy treatment series takes longer. It is important for the patient to follow the instructions of the physiotherapist and the doctor, as this will help to relieve the pain in the lower back and the spine.
- If the conservative therapy improves the condition, the patient can move on to the lifestyle change phase. In this phase, it is very important that the exercises, proper nutrition and a balanced lifestyle are part of everyday life.
