What is an infant hip ultrasound scan for?
The baby's hip ultrasound screening congenital malformations that do not yet cause complaints or symptoms may be detected or lesions that developed during the perinatal period. Infant ultrasound scans can also detect abnormalities that intrauterine ultrasound scans cannot yet detect.
The ultrasound scan is the does not cause pain or other health risks to the baby and can be repeated indefinitely. Of course, in most babies no abnormalities are found.
Who is hip ultrasound screening recommended for?
Hip ultrasound screening is recommended for all babies, but is particularly important if there is a family history of a developmental disorder such as hip dysplasia. Ultrasound screening of the baby is also recommended if the baby's development is below average.
