What is serum?

Serum is the liquid component of blood, the transport and nourishing medium for cells, a protein-rich solution with a precisely controlled composition that provides a stable, optimal environment for blood cells and the inner walls of blood vessels to function. Stem cells cannot proliferate without at least 10% of serum protein in their environment. At any one time, about 2.5 litres of serum circulates in our vascular beds, constantly exchanged with interstitial fluid, lymph, and even absorbed nutrients and inhaled vapour.

Blood serum is our body's carrier fluid, ensuring healthy cell function.

How does the serum work?

In the event of injury, the blood reacts immediately, starting a clotting process that not only blocks the hole in the vessel wall, but also causes activated platelets and white blood cells to produce growth factors and release them into the serum. It is the serum activated by the injury that causes the dormant stem cells to multiply and initiate healing. Serum therapy exploits this natural mechanism by taking blood from the patient and then returning the activated serum to where it is needed to slow down the regeneration process. Extensive scientific evidence shows that serum therapy is currently the most effective injection treatment for knee osteoarthritis known.

Serum therapy is the use of activated blood for healing.

Who can it be used for? Is it good for all types of cartilage wear?

Use is primarily a doctor's decision, based on professional recommendations and clinical trials. Serum therapy is not a panacea, nor can it be expected to work equally for everyone. A early stage of disease is still mainly characterised by cartilage erosion, the atrophy of the bone supporting it, in which case serum therapy is expected to have a regenerative effect, slowing down the progression of the disease.

Decades later, when the patient's aim is to delay the implantation of a prosthesis, serum therapy is already aimed at arthritis reduce and alleviate pain. Serum injections involve minimal intervention, but there are risks.

Serum therapy can be regenerative in the early phase and anti-inflammatory and analgesic in the later phase.

Treatment of cartilage wear with serum derivatives

Serum derivatives to stimulate the regeneration of damaged joints have been experimented with for decades. Good experience has been gained with many different types of blood serum, the best known of which is platelet rich plasma (PRP). Clinical studies have clearly shown that all types of serum therapy have beneficial effects on knee joint function. US researchers have found that injections should be repeated at least twice, but preferably three times, and that the effects start to be felt after 2 months, the time needed for the serum to activate joint regeneration.

The improvement is mainly in the reduction of pain, which lasts for at least 12 months and can be repeated if necessary. In comparative studies, serum therapy has been shown to have better results than hyaluronic acid injections, which have a weaker effect and only show improvement for 6 months.

Serum therapy is the best known injection treatment for knee osteoarthritis for cartilage damage.

How is hyperacute serum different and better?

In our scientific research, we were looking for the answer to the question of which of the many known serum derivatives is best able to activate the healing of tissues affected by osteoarthritis. In the case of bone marrow stem cells, which are responsible for rebuilding decaying bone and cartilage, we found that all serum variants were effective to a small extent, but when the cells were damaged by a new only the hyperacute serum was able to promote cell proliferation. Similar results have been seen in cartilage cells, bone cells and even human bone marrow tissue, and have been confirmed by several laboratories abroad.

As osteoarthritis is a disease that develops over decades from a series of minor injuries, it is important to treat with a serum that can optimally nourish stem cells in this condition.

The serum not only replenishes the lubricant in the joint, but also nourishes the cartilage and activates the regeneration of bone marrow stem cells.

How is the hyperacute serum prepared?

Developed by Orthosera GmbH, the patented device is used for blood sampling in a closed system under aseptic conditions. After physical separation of the patient sample, a hyperacute serum containing concentrated growth factors is obtained.

18 ml of blood yields 4 ml of serum, which contains significantly fewer cellular elements than whole blood.

The hyperacute serum is more nourishing to the cells and contains less inflammatory agents than PRP.
