Functional training
What is functional training?
A form of movement that focuses primarily on strengthening the core muscles of the trunk. The primary function of the trunk is stabilisation and mobility. The movement patterns are goal-oriented and developed by progression level, starting from a basic level, with or without equipment, from stable to unstable exercises, from easier to more difficult and complex ones.
Joints and muscles move in all directions of space, in chains of motion. Each movement involves the simultaneous coordinated work of several joints and every movement is also a sensorimotor development: results in „quality” muscles, not just „quantity”.
What is functional training all about?
A functional training is about treating the body as a whole.
We practice the movements we use in everyday life, purposefully and correctly: squatting, bending, lifting, etc., while learning the correct spinal and pelvic alignment, the correct use of our bodies in corrected situations.
The possibilities are endless in terms of exercise types, with a very colourful palette to choose from. Of course, we must emphasise the supervision of qualified professionals who can help us, according to our needs and level, to make our training sessions functional and injury-free.
Mechanism of action of functional training / physiotherapy
For the functional functioning of the spine, the active (muscles, voluntary elements) and passive (elements that cannot be operated voluntarily) proper functioning of the stabilisation system and these two systems coordinated by neural control is needed to ensure the functioning of.
Its mechanism of action is through the operation of the active system and the regulation of the nervous system. Development of neuromuscular function (inter- and intramuscular coordination), joint protection, coordination, balance, development of high quality movement patterns (progression of movement learning: from easy to difficult, from simple to complex, from known to unknown, from stable to unstable).
Functional physiotherapy treatments
Following a physical assessment and functional diagnosis, we design a tailor-made physiotherapy programme for our patients:
- Restoring the functional capacity of the spine (stability, mobility, endurance, load-bearing capacity) as far as possible
- Reduction or elimination of pain and other symptoms (sensory/motor) associated with spinal problems
- Prevent/slow down the progression of problems that have already developed
- Health promotion/prevention
