The paediatric orthopaedic examination is carried out by an orthopaedic specialist. In the investigation and treatment of orthopaedic complaints in childhood, paediatric orthopaedic screening examinations are also of paramount importance.

Screening in childhood can prevent many of the abnormalities that cause complaints, even in adulthood. Recommended screening tests in our private clinics in Budapest are performed by our paediatric orthopaedic specialists, teaching specialists from Semmelweis University, by appointment only. We see our patients without waiting at the booked appointment, even on Saturday and Sunday!

Paediatric Orthopaedics

Paediatric orthopaedic screening tests - when and what should you have checked?

At 4–6 weeks of age, an infant hip ultrasound examination is recommended. Infant hip screening can detect hip dysplasia early, allowing timely treatment.

after 1 year of age a general orthopaedic check-up is recommended. When your child is able to take his or her first independent steps, a comprehensive orthopaedic examination is recommended to assess the feet, posture, gait and knee alignment.

After the age of 4, a repeat general paediatric orthopaedic check-up is recommended. As gait matures and regular shoe wearing becomes part of everyday life, a repeat examination is recommended to assess gait, posture, ankle alignment and knee alignment and, if necessary, to correct them to ensure that the correct posture is established by school age.

After the age of 6, at the beginning of school age, spinal screening is recommended to assess posture and detect scoliosis, so that appropriate treatment can be started if necessary.

Private paediatric orthopaedics is available at all three of our Budapest clinics, and ultrasound hip examinations for infants are available at the Buda Private Musculoskeletal Clinic.

Cerebral palsy
- gentle, personalised care

In our paediatric and neuro-orthopaedic department, children with cerebral palsy are examined and treated by our highly experienced specialist, Dr. Ákos Morvai. We work with parents in a relaxed, confidential atmosphere during the assessment, and a personalised treatment plan is drawn up for each case, which combines conservative and, where appropriate, surgical solutions. Our goal, to improve the child's long-term mobility and independence, while using gentle, modern methods.

Minimally invasive surgery with Dr. Ákos Morvai

The minimally invasive procedure aims to improve your child’s everyday mobility as gently as possible, with minimal strain. International experience has shown that, when used for the appropriate indication, it can improve mobility and independence by an average of one functional level.

The procedure is performed by Dr. Ákos Morvai, head of paediatric and neuro-orthopaedics, who also has experience as a senior physician at a paediatric and neuro-orthopaedic centre in Munich. Treatment is supported by personalised planning and rehabilitation. The method is also used by several leading centres abroad (e.g. Barcelona, USA).

What happens during a paediatric orthopaedic examination?

  • Medical history: review of the circumstances of pregnancy, birth and delivery.
  • Screening for developmental abnormalities: developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) and hip immaturity can be detected early by targeted ultrasound screening, helping to prevent later musculoskeletal problems.
  • Infant screening, which does not only involve the hip joint.
  • Inspection: assessment of posture and gait, joint axis deviations, and the shape of the chest, spine and joints.
  • Functional testing: Functional examination of the spine, range of motion and deformities of small and large joints (shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, ankle), axial deviations.
  • Flatfoot assessment (collapse of the longitudinal arch), examination of foot deformities.
  • Summary of the treatment plan documentation, and preparation of the outpatient record.
  • Medicines and medical devices prescription.
  • Ultrasound diagnostics is carried out in the Buda Musculoskeletal Private Clinic.

Our main objective is to establish the most appropriate and effective treatment plan for the patient in order to achieve rapid and long-term recovery. This requires a detailed and thorough paediatric orthopaedic examination, the key purpose of which is to identify the causes of the complaint.
