Functions of the wrist joint and hand

The role of the wrist joint and hand is complex. It is involved in heavy physical work as well as fine motor skills, i.e. the ability to make precise, coordinated movements. This complex task requires a complex structure. This wonderful structure is in turn fragile, often causing problems and wrist pain.

The cause of wrist pain

Wrist pain is usually caused by monotonous, manual work, or unilateral, prolonged exertion such as typing or using a mouse while working on a computer. Pain in the joint may also occur after unusually heavy workloads of short duration. Fractures and bruises following a fall can also cause pain in the wrist.

Hand joint pain

The skeleton of the hand is made up of tiny bones, which can show signs of wear and tear, or degeneration. Repetitive, manual tasks can cause this lesion. Symptoms include pain in the wrist and swelling of the affected joint. These symptoms are most common in the back of the hand, but the joints of the thumb may also be affected.

In this case, the clamping force may be reduced and pain may accompany the movement. It is important to take wrist pain seriously, because in advanced degenerative changes, the bones that make up the thumb can move out of their normal position. In more severe cases, surgical intervention may be necessary to try to relieve symptoms and restore function. In milder cases, experts recommend immobilisation.

Wrist pain from excessive computer use

Excessive strain on the tendons

Not only the bones but also various soft parts are responsible for the complex function of the hand. When overloaded, the tendons around the wrist joint can also become painful. The tendon sheaths surrounding the tendons become inflamed and fluid accumulates locally in the painful area. The movement is accompanied by a snowdrop-like sound and the grip strength of the hand is also reduced. The most important part of the treatment is to rest the hand. If the pain is reduced and the inflammation subsides, it is worth strengthening the muscles to prevent recurrence of symptoms on return to work.

Long-lasting inflammation of the tendon sheaths can lead to the development of further diseases. In such cases, the tendon sheaths around the tendon become thicker in a circular pattern, preventing the tendon from moving. If the tendon sheaths thicken, two lesions can develop. The bunions, which is a lesion of the flexor tendons, and De Quervain's disease, which is caused by a narrowing of the tendon sheath around the two tendons of the thumb after chronic inflammation. These lesions are associated with pain and restricted movement. In some cases it is not possible to stretch the fingers. Unfortunately, conservative treatment rarely leads to a cure, but hand surgery usually leads to a complete cure.

Treating hand pain

The lesions mentioned above can be treated in most cases with rest. After the onset of pain, the first thing to do is to spare the joint and use anti-inflammatory procedures. Ice packs and topical application of non-steroidal ointments are recommended. During rest, movements that have led to overuse of the joint should be stopped. If monotonous, one-sided work is the cause of the problem, the work should be stopped until the pain has subsided. It is worth taking wrist pain seriously from the first onset of symptoms. If the inflammation persists for a long time, lesions will develop that cannot be treated conservatively. It is advisable to obtain medical aids to support the hand during the day.
