Shoulder, upper arm and shoulder injuries - When is rest enough and when do you need medical help?

Shoulder pain: rest or serious intervention?
Have you ever thought that a sudden jerk or a „it will go away” type of shoulder pain could be a sign of more serious trouble? Among shoulder, upper arm and shoulder blade injuries, it is sometimes difficult at first to tell what is a simple pull or a banal „insomnia” (for example, discomfort from poor posture) and what is something that really needs medical intervention. Dr. György Kocsis orthopaedic specialist - who also has extensive experience in dealing with this type of problem at BMM - was asked about when to try rest and when you need more serious help for a shoulder injury.
The shoulder joint is a highly complex system: is capable of a wide range of motion through the muscles, tendons and ligaments, allowing the arm to move almost fully. Just think of how much you do with your arms and shoulders on a typical day, from the simplest activities (making coffee in the morning, getting dressed) to playing sports or working around the house. It's this need for multiple movements that makes the shoulder vulnerable. One wrong movement, one poorly chosen exercise or some previous inflammation and you're already experiencing unpleasant shoulder pain.
The most common shoulder pain include:
- Upper arm pain: It mainly occurs at night, often waking up when you can't find a comfortable position or a sudden movement causes a sharp sting.
- Shoulder blade pain: It often radiates into the upper back or neck and can, after a while, interfere with lifting the arm.
- Shoulder pain: It is usually felt with every movement, especially when it comes to raising the arm, turning it or circling.
- Shoulder joint injury: It typically occurs when a sudden movement overloads the joint - it can be caused by a fall, a sports injury or an accidental jerk.
Many people tend to think that the pain will go away quickly, as rest, some compresses or pain-relieving ointment will usually do the trick. In some cases this is the case. The problem starts when the symptoms do not subside after several days, they may also get stronger, or when the problem comes back. In such cases, it is worth considering getting specialist help to treat the shoulder injury, as unfortunately, delaying a medical examination for too long can easily make the problem chronic.

Is it possible to get away with a shoulder injury with „home remedies”?
Sometimes it really is enough to rest, ice, warm up or do some gentle stretching exercises, perhaps manual therapy, but you should not use them for too long if you do not feel an improvement. Remember: our body signals us when something is wrong. And a shoulder injury can only really heal if we know exactly what's behind it.
Why is it important to see Dr György Kocsis or another orthopaedic specialist in a similar field?
- They accurately assess the situation: Usually, a detailed consultation and physical examination will determine how serious the shoulder injury is. If necessary, various imaging tests (X-rays, MRI, ultrasound) to check for cartilage damage, tears, inflammation or other lesions.
- A personalised treatment plan: Every person is different, so there is no single „magic bullet”. If you are an amateur athlete, for example, treatment needs to be tailored to the expected workload and rate of return, while for an office job, rethinking your daily posture habits may be key.
- Effective pain relief: Therapeutic methods - physiotherapy, physical therapy, targeted injections, medication, etc. - used under the advice and professional supervision of a doctor can help speed up recovery and minimise the chance of complications later on.
- Prevention: If you are prone to upper arm pain or have suffered a shoulder injury in the past, a specialist can recommend preventive exercises, movement patterns and posture tips to avoid further problems.
We all have days when we feel we'd rather go home and go to bed with a bowl of hot soup, some warm compresses and a good film, trusting that the aching shoulder will be gone in the morning. This can really be a solution if you only have a one-off, temporary complaint - after a bad move or a few days of overwork, for example. However, if your shoulder pain doesn't go away, or if it keeps recurring, you may also have recurring shoulder blade pain, it is advisable to ask a professional about further options.

What can you gain by seeing a doctor in time?
- Faster recovery and less suffering.
- In the long term, the chances of developing chronic complaints are reduced.
- You'll be able to move more, work more, play more sport and generally have a better quality of life.
- Learn how to prevent shoulder, upper arm and shoulder blade injuries in the future.
Typical situations when rest is no longer enough
- Persistent pain: If the shoulder pain persists for more than a week or two and is not relieved by ice or anti-inflammatories, it is worth seeing an orthopaedic specialist.
- Range of motion narrowing: When you can't lift your arms or have difficulty moving in certain directions, it can often be due to shoulder joint damage, torn tendons or ligaments, or calcium deposits.
- Pain at night: Persistent, sleep-disrupting pain is often caused by inflammation or wear and tear, which now needs specialist help to identify and treat.
- A complaint after injury or trauma: A major fall, a sports injury (such as weight training, martial arts or even a ball game) or a bad shoulder strain are all good reasons to try something other than rest.
What happens during the consultation and treatments?
- Assessment and diagnosis: Dr György Kocsis will interview you in detail, review any previous medical history, and then make an accurate diagnosis with a physical examination (range of motion, muscle strength, local pain points) and imaging tests if necessary.
- Management plan: On the basis of the results, it will suggest options: this may include rest, in some cases immobilisation (for example a special arm brace), physiotherapy, physiotherapy, injection therapy, drug therapy or, in very justified cases, surgery.
- Aftercare, rehabilitation: Treatment of shoulder injuries may involve a combination of physiotherapy and home exercises. This is where you can do a lot to ensure that recovery is as quick and successful as possible
If you feel that shoulder pain is becoming a part of your everyday life, or your upper arm pain or pain in the shoulder blade that prevents even the most basic movements, do not hesitate to consult a professional. Take the necessary action in time! At BMM, Dr. György Kocsis will help you to find out what is behind it and develop the optimal treatment plan, so that the shoulder injury does not take his life.
It is natural that we all need some rest and „self-treatment” from time to time. But if the pain gives you reason to suspect it may be more serious than is a simple pull, then a specialist check-up is the best investment in your health. This will not only save you unnecessary rounds and prolonged suffering, but also make recovery safer and faster.
In the case of a shoulder injury, it is really important to know when patience and rest are enough, and when a specialist examination becomes urgent. Upper arm pain, shoulder blade pain and prolonged shoulder pain are all signs that can make the experience of sport and everyday movement more than just a misery, but in the longer term they can cause more serious lesions. As scary as it may seem to go to the doctor, remember: an orthopaedic specialist - especially a highly experienced and empathetic one like Dr György Kocsis - can help you not only to relieve pain, but also to better understand how your body works and prevent future injuries.
