Although the rheumatology and the orthopaedics are two medical specialties that in many cases overlap, yet there are some important differences between them.

What are the similarities between the two disciplines?

Their similarities is that both branches are essentially concerned with musculoskeletal disorders, i.e. pain and stiffness of muscles, tendons, joints and bones.

A difference lies mainly in the causes of the complaint.

What does rheumatology do?

A rheumatology is the branch of internal medicine that focuses on diseases of the musculoskeletal system. This affects nearly 70% of the population, regardless of age.

A rheumatism causes pain and stiffness in the muscles, tendons, spine and joints. Symptoms can last for a few days or even years, causing minor discomfort or severe disability. To relieve the pain and stiffness, the rheumatism that is causing the symptoms needs to be treated.
