Anatomy of the shoulder
The shoulder is one of the most versatile and mobile joints in the body. Because of its complexity, the complaints affecting the shoulder joint are many and varied.
The ball and socket joint in the shoulder allows you to move your arm not only in one direction, but also in a circle.
The shoulder joint is formed by the humeral head, clavicle and scapula. The bones are surrounded by a joint capsule, a complex ligamentous system and the rotator cuff ensures its stability.
Types of shoulder pain
Just as many different lesions can develop in the shoulder, shoulder pain itself can take many different forms.
The pain for example, a succession of dull, stabbing or sharp shooting pains. In the arm or neck radiant numbness and muscle weakness can also be a symptom. The pain may be constant, but it may also occur during movement. Sometimes the shoulder pain occurs at night (or even at night). This makes it difficult to sleep at night.
Diseases underlying shoulder pain
Shoulder pain can be caused by many different conditions. Here are some of the more common ones:
Shoulder dislocation
If the shoulder is unstable, i.e. the loose and overstretched ligaments do not fix the bones properly, it is easy to develop a shoulder dislocation, even after a fall. A shoulder dislocation can also occur as a result of trauma. In this case, the shoulder is subjected to a strong external impact. Symptoms of the lesion include very intense, sharp pain, a feeling of instability when moving the arm, deformation of the shoulder and swelling of the joint.
Frozen shoulder syndrome
Most commonly affecting women aged 40 to 50 years, this lesion can occur in chronic inflammatory disease of the shoulder and surrounding soft tissues. Its development may be linked to previous injury, illness, prolonged immobilisation and overuse, but there may be no known cause. A shoulder pain, typically in the front, outer area of the shoulder, and a narrowing of the range of motion is also common. The joint becomes more and more bound and stiff, hence the name of the disease
Rotator cuff damage
The rotator cuff is made up of four muscles that are positioned around the humerus and help to stabilise and move the shoulder joint. Tendon impingement and an unstable shoulder can contribute to rotator cuff injuries. Rotator cuff tears are typically caused by sports and physical exertion. The main symptoms are shoulder pain and reduced mobility.
Joint wear
In the “ball and socket” part of the shoulder, the cartilage surface can wear away due to prolonged overuse, shoulder injuries and inflammatory shoulder conditions. However, in many cases the cause of the disease is not known. A common symptom is constant shoulder pain, mostly in the back, which may occur at night, and a loss of range of motion. Dressing and drying hair can also be difficult because of shoulder pain. A crackling sensation may occur when moving the shoulder. Advanced wear and tear of the shoulder joint can be treated surgically if conservative treatments are ineffective, more specifically by implantation of a shoulder prosthesis can be cured.
Prevention of shoulder diseases
There are genetic factors involved in the development of shoulder conditions, and an accident can happen at any time that leads to shoulder injury. However, there are still a few things you can do to reduce your chances of developing shoulder pain.
To prevent shoulder pain, it is important not to overload the joint, but a sedentary lifestyle is not good either. Even though the weight of the body does not put a strain on the shoulder joint, it is still subject to a lot of stress every day, as we use our hands and arms a lot. Daily strenuous physical work and excessive exercise can also be harmful. If you want to prevent shoulder pain, avoid sudden lifting of heavy objects.
Sitting is not good for you because it puts a one-sided load on the joint and the muscles that move it. Tight and inflamed muscles can lead to severe shoulder pain. For sedentary work, it is recommended to get up from the desk every hour and do push-ups, to move the limbs a little. Suggested from physiotherapist request a series of exercises to compensate for the harmful effects of sedentary work.
Treating shoulder pain
For shoulder pain, the obvious choice is arm rest, which often helps, but it does not remove the root cause. If you rest your shoulder for a long time, it's easy to get into a vicious circle: you rest the sore shoulder more and more, which reduces the range of movement. Muscles can become shortened and flattened, which in turn increases the pain and difficulty of movement. It is not worth delaying the examination of shoulder pain, because with personalized treatment, pain can be effectively reduced and freedom of movement can be preserved or regained!
