Spine is the supporting column of our body, made up of vertebrae. Its role is to provide posture and coordinate large movements. It provides a strong and flexible skeleton for our torso, which is why its integrity is crucial for a smooth everyday life.

The intervertebral discs, cartilage plates that are located between the vertebrae to provide a flexible connection between them. This makes our spine flexible and mobile. From orthopaedics one of his main areas of expertise is specifically spinal disorders.

The most common spinal disorder is scoliosis, or scoliosis of the spine. There are many causes of spinal disorders, and the complaints are varied - from neck stiffness, to disc herniation, to lumbar strain.

According to orthopaedic statistics, one of the the most common spinal disorder is scoliosis. We are talking about curvature of the spinal column, which can cause problems in our daily lives.

Symptom of scoliosis

One shoulder or hip is higher than the other. This causes back pain, a limp and reduced exercise capacity, but can also lead to more serious complications later on, such as respiratory failure or heart problems. Scoliosis typically develops in childhood, between the ages of 10 and 12, usually due to a sedentary lifestyle and a weak back. It is therefore of the utmost importance to have orthopaedic check-ups in childhood, but also in adulthood.

Depending on your symptoms, your orthopaedic specialist will perform a physical examination and may recommend imaging diagnostics. On the basis of the examinations, he draws up an orthopaedic opinion and recommends therapy. A large proportion of spinal problems can be treated and even reversed with specific physiotherapy (McKenzie method, Schroth therapy, spinal stabilisation training). The orthopaedic specialist will work with the qualified physiotherapist to develop a treatment plan to resolve the complaint.

Protecting and maintaining our spine is therefore crucial to maintaining our body's mobility. In the event of pain, stiffness and other complaints, an orthopaedic examination is recommended as soon as possible, as the sooner the complaint is diagnosed, the easier it is to treat.
