Why are your hands numb? Common causes

When we talk about numbness in the hands, there are many different complaints. A the most common is numbness in the hands, which often takes the form of night-time numbness: you wake up and feel as if your hand has died. This can cause tingling of the fingers and sometimes even whitening of the fingers. But you may also experience hand tremor or hand weakness, when there is a loss of grip. Sometimes these symptoms are only a minor inconvenience, sometimes they are long-lasting and have a serious impact on daily life.

The question that rightly arises is: „I wonder what's behind it? What's making my hands go numb?” Well, the answer can be varied, as numbness and pain in the hands can be caused by a range of conditions - from mild, temporary problems to more serious conditions. We've put together a list of the most common triggers to give you a better idea of what might be going on:

A middle-aged man holds his wrist while experiencing hand numbness or pain
  1. Tunnel syndromes
This includes for example carpal tunnel syndrome, in which the nerves running along the wrist area are put under pressure. Numbness, tingling, sometimes pain and weakness in the hand, especially in the first three fingers (thumb, index, middle). Numbness at night is particularly characteristic of this condition. There is also tunnel syndrome of the elbow or shoulder, which can lead to similar complaints.
  2. Nerve damage
Peripheral neuropathy, for example, is a nerve damage that is often associated with diabetes, alcohol-related problems, or certain vitamin deficiencies. Neuropathy can develop in the limbs, causing numbness, tingling and sometimes burning or sharp pain.
  3. Cervical spine problems
Often we think that neck problems are just headaches or neck pain, but herniated disc or cervical spine or pinched cervical nerve often results in radiating pain and numbness in the arms and hands. Hand pain of this origin may sometimes be accompanied by neck stiffness, headaches or pain in the shoulder girdle muscles.
  4. Arthritis
Whether it's the small joints of the hand or the wrist, arthritis (such as rheumatoid arthritis) can cause swelling, pain and sometimes numbness. Inflammation causes the nerves running near the joints to become compressed, which can lead to discomfort.
  5. Vascular disorders
It is possible that the whitening of the fingers and numbness in the hands is a symptom of a circulatory disorder. For example, in Raynaud's phenomenon, the fingers turn pale, then blue, then flushed when exposed to cold, which may be accompanied by numbness and pain.

What can you do about hand numbness?

Imagine how it would be if you could finally get rid of the annoying hand numbness and recurring pain! If you no longer had to wake up at night with a numb hand and in the morning you felt as if your whole arm was „foreign”. Or if you could finally feel free to start gardening, DIY or playing sports without fear of sudden pain or weakness.

The good news is that in most cases there is a solution. Making an accurate diagnosis there are several therapeutic options available - whether conservative or surgical methods are needed. A physiotherapy, a physiotherapy, the use of special braces or the surgical resolution of tunnel syndrome can all help you to live a full life again. And the right medical support from Dr György Kocsis and the expert team at BMM can help enormously.

So the desired state is not an unattainable dream. Hand weakness, hand tremors, numbness of the fingers or even neck pinching can be alleviated, and many can be completely eliminated. You don't have to accept that hand pain or numbness is part of everyday life. Think of how liberating it will feel when you can once again hold your loved ones' hands, open a jar, work on the computer or even enjoy your hobby without having to keep an eye on your hand condition.

The sooner you see the right doctor, the quicker and easier the road to recovery can be. And when it comes to treatment, there are many tried and tested methods to choose from:

  • The physiotherapy helps to improve range of motion, strengthen muscles and learn correct movement patterns.
  • The physiotherapy - such as ultrasound, laser or electrical treatments - help reduce inflammation, stimulate blood circulation and support tissue regeneration.
  • Some recording devices (wrist splints, elbow pads, etc.) can relieve pressure on the affected area to reduce nerve pressure and allow the joints to rest and heal.
  • And if conservative treatments do not work, there is the option of surgical intervention for example, the release of the carpal tunnel, which can relieve chronic pressure on nerves.

Of course, each case is unique, so it is important to think in terms of individualised solutions. You deserve to stop hand numbness and pain from becoming a daily obstacle and start living a full life again!
