Life after hip surgery - Half marathon national championship 3rd place after hip replacement surgery

It's not uncommon for someone to have a redemptive surgery only after a long time and much suffering. Ilona Danyiné Varga's pain was also initially treated with medication and physiotherapy, but unfortunately not with much success. The retired physical education teacher's passion is sport, so she did everything to recover. A lucky coincidence also helped him to get hip surgery at the Budapest Musculoskeletal Private Clinic Dr. Zoltán Bejek PhD an orthopaedic surgeon. In this article, Ilona shares the story of her recovery.

Hip pain even at rest

It was a long road to hip surgery for Ilona, who is a middle and long distance runner, so as a senior athlete it was particularly bad when she started to feel pain in her hip joint. Her problems first started long before her hip surgery, in 2011-2012. At first, she only felt increasing pain when running, then later also when walking, and finally her sleep and rest were disturbed by the severe pain. His complaints also interfered with his work. It is unfortunate when a teacher in a PE class is limping and cannot demonstrate exercises to her students.

A lucky coincidence led to the doctor who performed hip surgery

Ilona did everything she could to help him recover. She visited many places, private clinics, private physiotherapists. After many treatments and no improvement in her condition, the possibility of hip replacement surgery was raised. In the video, Ilona tells how a lucky coincidence led her to the orthopaedic surgeon who performed the hip replacement:

I couldn't run anymore, so I went to a gym to do some strength training. It was here that I met a friend of mine, who was the same age as me and had already undergone the hip replacement surgery that I was about to have. In fact, she was waiting for the other side to be operated on by Zoltán Bejek. I learned all the details about the hip surgery from my training partner. He encouraged me and reassured me to the maximum that my condition could only get better, so I should feel free to undergo the operation and see the doctor.

Ilona soon made an appointment with Dr. Zoltán Bejek, the head orthopaedic surgeon at the Budapest Musculoskeletal Private Clinic. From the very first moment she felt that she was in the best hands and when the doctor said that she would need surgery, she felt no fear or doubt.

Tailored hip surgery

The head doctor, Dr. Zoltán Bejek PhD, provided Ilona with all the information she needed during the consultation. The doctor also talks in the video about the importance of personalising hip surgery:

In the 21st century, the permanent solution to serious hip problems is hip arthroplasty, which involves replacing the patient's hip joint. There are several ways to do this, depending on the type of implant used in the hip replacement. The choice of implant is always patient-specific. This means that we need to take into account the patient's age, gender, activity level and the quality of their bones. To achieve the best surgical result, we need to choose the type of prosthesis that will serve the patient best and for the longest possible time.

Rehabilitation after hip surgery

In the video, Dr. Zoltán Bejek, orthopaedic surgeon, explains how the hip replacement implantation is only the beginning of recovery, and it must be followed by rehabilitation. A physiotherapy after hip and knee replacement surgery is also key. This involves, among other things, getting the patient out of bed and having the physiotherapist do exercises to help strengthen the hip muscles and improve range of motion. The different physiotherapy equipment the physiotherapist also teaches the patient how to use the equipment.

Ilona's rehabilitation went very smoothly:

I had my surgery on Friday and on Monday I was visited by my physiotherapist, Mónika. She got me out of bed and I was off in the walker. Later that week, on Friday, I was able to go to the rehabilitation hospital in Visegrad, where I was also lucky because I was assigned to a very good physiotherapist. He confirmed that a sporting background really counts for a lot, because we were really progressing at a good pace with the exercises and the recovery.

Ilona's goal was not only to be able to carry out her daily tasks without pain, as sport is her passion. So after her hip operation she learned to run again. She did so well that, to her great delight, she was able to take part in a national age-group half marathon championship, where she came third! Before her hip problems, she had been winning races like this, but now it was another fantastic achievement. Since then, she has been running 40-50 kilometres a week, swimming once a week and exercising. Hip surgery has made her life much more meaningful:

The good thing about retirement is that I have more opportunities to do sport, and I don't want to stop. My message to everyone is that you should play any sport for life. Thanks to the hip operation, my possibilities and my living conditions have improved considerably, as I can move without hindrance and without pain. That means a lot!
