Dr. Bence Balázs Moravcsik, orthopaedic traumatologist, medical director of BMM, gave a professional interview on TV2's Lifestyle Magazine about why it is not worth delaying prosthesis surgery. A permanent solution to chronic joint problems is the insertion of hip or knee implants. This operation becomes necessary when conservative treatments no longer help the pain and the patient's quality of life deteriorates. The idea is that by inserting a hip or knee replacement, movement between the bones is free and pain-free again.

In the show, Dr Moravcsik presented BMM's carefully developed 5-step Prosthesis Audit system, which is not only a thorough medical examination, but also helps patients build confidence instead of fear and live a life that can be planned by knowing the ideal time for surgery.

What is the BMM Prosthesis Audit?

The BMM Prosthesis Audit is designed to help the patient prepare for surgery

  • Specialist orthopaedic examination and X-ray
  • X-ray based software implant planning
  • Implant advice for the most suitable prosthesis
  • Estimating and minimising the risk of co-morbidities
  • Determine the ideal time for surgery -for a predictable life

During the clinical examination, the orthopaedic specialist will be able to determine whether surgery is needed at all or whether other methods can help.

After the X-ray examination, a specially developed software can be used to determine exactly what type of implant the patient needs. The orthopaedic specialist makes it a priority to recommend the most suitable prosthesis, as the patient will live with it for almost 20 years - this is included in the prosthesis consultation.

In the fourth step of the audit, the specialist will assess any comorbidities that could pose a risk during the operation. By minimising these risks, he or she prepares the patient to go to the operating theatre in the best possible shape. This is not only necessary for safety, but also makes post-operative rehabilitation quicker and easier.

At the end of the audit, the specialist will set a date that is ideal for the patient - this could be years later, or even weeks for more severe joint wear.

Getting your life back after surgery

László Slihoczki, author of the book Hip Hernia, has already undergone a successful right hip replacement surgery and has come for a consultation with Dr. Benc Moravcsik. Planning for a left hip replacement is underway. Thanks to modern technology, every step of the procedure can be planned precisely. László Slihoczki talks frankly about his condition before the operation:

The pain is hard to describe to someone who doesn't know how difficult it is to live with a sore hip. After surgery, you really do get your freedom of life back, the joy of movement. I can practically live a much freer life.

How to register for the test?

During the BMM 5-Step Prosthetic Audit, the orthopaedic surgeon not only establishes the diagnosis, but also explains in detail the treatment plan that will help patients prepare for surgery.

We performed more than 800 operations last year, and our hip and knee replacement patients reported waiting around 5 years before coming in for surgery. It's not worth waiting 5 years, don't put off surgery!
- says the orthopaedic specialist.
