Author Dr. Ákos Morvai | 2025.11.21.
The adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS for short) is a lesion of the spine that is associated with growth period, most often the during puberty is formed. The word „idiopathic” means that the exact cause is not known - it is not an accident, not a defect in posture, and not the result of a single specific disease.
Scoliosis in this case three-dimensional lesion, so not only does it bend sideways, but the vertebrae they get twisted. Most often, a rightward curve is observed in the middle part of the back (the thoracic spine). This is often accompanied by a natural curvature of the back, called the kyphosis, it becomes flatter.
In most adolescents, in the early stages no symptoms - parents often accidentally notice that one shoulder is higher or one shoulder blade is more prominent.
In more severe cases, however, you may have back pain or reduced lung capacity is.
To make a diagnosis, it is essential to X-ray image from the entire ridge, from several directions. From this, the doctor can determine the degree and direction of the misalignment, which will help treatment planning.
Therapy can take several forms:
- In milder cases regular monitoring and targeted therapy are sufficient.
- Medium level often in curvature corset (cored) can be worn to slow or stop the deterioration of the obliquity.
- For more severe deformities, or if the child will grow a lot more, surgical intervention (spinal stabilisation, so-called spondylodesis surgery), which is performed in specialised centres.
The most important thing is that parents to spot the signs in time, and see an orthopaedic specialist. Early detection greatly increases the chances of success of conservative (non-surgical) treatment.
